Dramatic end: Police forced a car to stop during rush hour in Liverpool city centre

Armed police rammed a car during rush-hour traffic in a city centre to arrest a man on suspicion of attempted murder.

The drama unfolded in Water Street, just yards from Liverpool Town Hall, at around 5.30pm.

Police told the a 30-year-old man who was a passenger in a grey Volkswagen had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following .

Two other men were arrested on suspicion of other offences.

cordoned off a small section of Water Street to allow the car to be recovered for forensic examination.

No-one was injured during the police incident.

Eyewitnesses said three men were hauled from their black Volkswagen Golf and made to lie on the floor as they were handcuffed.

An office worker who saw the incident said: “I was looking down from my window and I saw the unmarked police cars stop the other car.

“They must have been following it and chose their moment to strike. Some of the girls in my office said the policemen were armed.

“I’ve no idea why they stopped the car but they were searching its boot afterwards.”

It is understood a black unmarked police BMW 4x4 swerved in front of the Golf to stop it in its tracks – sometimes known as a ‘hard stop’.

Two other unmarked police cars then pulled up on either side of the Golf before its occupants were pulled out.

Another onlooker said: “I heard them shouting ‘armed police, armed police’ then the men in the car were made to get on the ground to be handcuffed.”

Plainclothes officers were seen searching the Golf’s boot after it was pulled over.

Marked police cars, including a van, arrived at the scene shortly after the Golf was stopped.
